The Alchemist Pages 51-71

Analyze how an author's choices concerning how to structure a text, order events within it (e.g., parallel plots), and manipulate time (e.g., pacing, flashbacks) create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise.

Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.

E.Q: Define each component of a texts structure and identify each part in the Alchemist.

Starter: 

Gallery Walk 

We will conduct a gallery walk to display your mind maps.  

For at least three people provide a plus and delta for their work. 
Make sure this is critical feedback.
Go beyond nice job or needs color!

Focus on the content.

These skills will help with activities later!!

This is due next Tuesday, November 21. 

2.  Collaborative Annotation of pages 51-71

Follow the steps below:  

1.  Write 3-4 sentences to share with your group based on the reading.
What did you find interesting?
How does this relate to the major ideas?
2.  Sit in a circle with your group, so you can all see each other. 
3.  Pass your writing to the person on the left. 
4.  Read the writing from your peer and respond to the writing on the same piece of paper, expanding on what previous students wrote.
6. Repeat until you have your original piece of writing.
7. Read through the comments.
8.  Answer the question: What did I learn about the big idea through collaboration?
9.  Share ideas with the class. 

3.  The Alchemist pages 71-87

As you read, complete a double entry journal.
Your quotes should relate to our big idea of dreams.

Evaluate the success of the collaborative annotations.
